This brochure outlines a three-year framework for planning the Authority's activities in facilitating and managing the provision of quality, vocational education and training. Changes within the workplace, in skill requirements, the composition of the labour market and the need for lifelong learning were significant factors in creating the plan. These goals and their strategies are outlined: (1) managing the ACT vocational education and training system on behalf of government, industry and individuals; (2) improving the quality and relevance of the vocational education and training system; (3) developing a diverse and competitive training market; and (4) managing and influencing changes to the vocational education and training system consistent with ACT priorities. This publication provides a program for the development of vocational education and training in the ACT for 1996 and 1997. It is expected that during this period, government-funded vocational education and training activity (as measured by enrolments and curriculum hours) will increase. Training priorities of the ACT include: (1) the need for further development of information technology applications skills; (2) catering for the expected growth in employment opportunities in the service industries; (3) management training; (4) the need to focus on areas of skill shortage; and (5) the importance of the public sector and small business as employers. Training priorities of ACT-specific industry groups are discussed as is the ACT's response to the needs of equity groups. Initiatives which focus on six key areas will be pursued to further the national strategy for vocational education and training. Show less

'Reaching their potential' is a strategy for women and girls in vocational education and training (VET) in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The following goals were defined: (1) to increase the number of young women and girls involved in VET; (2) to establish processes that facilitate women and girls with low levels of English, literacy and numeracy accessing VET programs; (3) to establish processes that facilitate mature women accessing and completing VET programs; (4) to increase the number of women and girls accessing and completing VET programs in the information communication technologies industries; (5) to establish processes that facilitate women and girls of indigenous backgrounds accessing and completing VET programs; and, (6) to establish incentives that target the participation of women and girls in VET.
